Worried that she might wake one of the children, she lowered her voice and said, “You know how.”

He sighed heavily. “Not this again.”

“Yes, we’re back to this. We’re back to Helen Baker.”

“But it’s over; I fired her and I hired Eve Miller just like you asked me to.”

“But that hasn’t stopped her from coming to the church, now has it?”

“Well, what do you want me to do? Ban her from coming.”

“…If you want this marriage to work.”

“Come on… that isn’t fair… I can’t do that. We’re the only black church in town.”

“So?” She shrugged and said, “She isn’t black.”

“Yes, she is.”

“Her daddy was black, but she clearly takes after her mother.” She said, referring to her green eyes, silky brown hair, and light skin.

“It doesn’t matter. She isn’t white enough to sit in any of these churches around here, and I can’t ask her to drive an hour away just because it would make our lives easier. We’re just going to have to find a way to live with it.”
